I am constantly asked to supply a list of possible cost to own a boat. This is a difficult question since every boat has its unique maintenance issues and each maintenance provider has his or her own payment scheduled and profit margin!
One of my clients purchased a 280 Sea Ray Sundancer. The engine water pressure sensor alarm was cycling on and off for one of the engines and my client asked me to locate a engine mechanic that could correct the problem.
The 1st mechanic I called, an independent mechanic that I'd worked with for over 13 years and was very reliable, never returned my calls or text messages.
The second mechanic , also an independent mechanic, took a look at the problem and felt it was way too complex a job and declined the job.
The third mechanic I called was a well established engine repair outfit with a retail store and a number of very qualified mechanics on staff. He was booked and could not look at the boat for a minimum of seven days but did quote the labor for the job at about $400.
My client was able to locate his own mechanic, an independent, that fixed the problem in less the 15 minutes for a total cost of maybe $150!
All boat owners have has similar experiences with boat mechanics. This is the place to share your experiences, good and bad. Name names and prices for the work performed on your boat.
